बहुत समय पहले उज्जयिनी के राजा भोज को एक दिन खुदाई के दौरान एक भव्य सिंहासन मिला। यह कोई साधारण सिंहासन नहीं था, बल्कि उसमें 32 पुतलियाँ थीं, जो जादुई शक्तियों से युक्त थीं। जब राजा भोज उस सिंहासन पर बैठने लगे, तो पहली पुतली ने उन्हें रोकते हुए कहा, “हे राजन! पहले सुनो कि इस सिंहासन पर बैठने योग्य केवल राजा विक्रमादित्य थे। अगर तुम भी उनकी तरह न्यायप्रिय और दयालु हो, तो ही इस पर बैठ सकते हो।”

राजा भोज ने जिज्ञासा से पूछा, “राजा विक्रमादित्य इतने महान क्यों थे?”

तब पहली पुतली ने एक अद्भुत कथा सुनाई।

राजा विक्रमादित्य की न्यायप्रियता

बहुत समय पहले की बात है, उज्जयिनी नगरी में राजा विक्रमादित्य का शासन था। वे अपनी न्यायप्रियता, दयालुता और बुद्धिमत्ता के लिए प्रसिद्ध थे। उनकी न्यायप्रियता इतनी महान थी कि उनकी प्रजा उन्हें देवताओं के समान मानती थी।

गरीब ब्राह्मण की समस्या

एक दिन राजा विक्रमादित्य अपने दरबार में न्याय कर रहे थे कि तभी एक गरीब ब्राह्मण रोते हुए उनके पास पहुँचा। उसने राजा को प्रणाम किया और अपनी व्यथा सुनाई। ब्राह्मण ने कहा, “महाराज, मेरा एकमात्र बैल चोरी हो गया है। वही मेरी आजीविका का साधन था। अब मेरे परिवार के पास खाने के लिए कुछ भी नहीं है। कृपया मुझे न्याय दिलाएँ।”

राजा विक्रमादित्य का न्याय

राजा विक्रमादित्य ने तुरंत अपने गुप्तचरों को आदेश दिया कि वे चोर का पता लगाएँ। राजा विक्रमादित्य की न्यायप्रियता के कारण उनके गुप्तचर अत्यंत कुशल थे और शीघ्र ही उन्होंने चोर को पकड़ लिया। जब चोर को दरबार में लाया गया, तो उसने स्वीकार किया कि उसने बैल चुराया था। परंतु उसने यह भी बताया कि उसने यह अपराध मजबूरी में किया। चोर ने कहा, “महाराज, मेरी माँ विधवा है और बहुत वृद्ध भी। हमारे पास खाने के लिए कुछ भी नहीं था, इसलिए मजबूरी में मुझे चोरी करनी पड़ी। मेरा उद्देश्य किसी को हानि पहुँचाना नहीं था।”

न्यायप्रिय राजा विक्रमादित्य का ऐतिहासिक निर्णय

राजा विक्रमादित्य ने दोनों की स्थिति को ध्यान से सुना और फिर निर्णय लिया। “सिंहासन बत्तीसी की पहली कहानी” में वे अपने अद्वितीय न्याय से एक मिसाल कायम करते हैं। उन्होंने ब्राह्मण को उसके बैल के बदले एक नया बैल और कुछ अनाज दिए, ताकि वह फिर से अपना जीवनयापन कर सके। साथ ही, चोर को भी एक अवसर दिया। उन्होंने उसे अपनी सेना में एक सामान्य सैनिक के रूप में भर्ती कर लिया और कहा, “तुमने चोरी की, यह गलत था। परंतु यदि तुम मेहनत और ईमानदारी से काम करोगे, तो तुम्हारा जीवन संवर सकता है। मैं तुम्हें यह अवसर देता हूँ।”

राजा के इस न्यायपूर्ण निर्णय से पूरा दरबार और प्रजा अत्यंत प्रभावित हुए। राजा विक्रमादित्य की कहानियाँ हमें सिखाती हैं कि न्याय केवल दंड देना नहीं होता, बल्कि उचित समाधान निकालना भी आवश्यक होता है।

King Vikramaditya’s love for justice

Long ago, King Vikramaditya ruled the city of Ujjaini. He was famous for his love for justice, kindness and intelligence. His love for justice was so great that his subjects considered him like gods.

One day King Vikramaditya was giving justice in his court when a poor Brahmin came to him crying. He bowed to the king and told him his sorrow. The Brahmin said, “Maharaj, my only bull has been stolen. That was my means of livelihood. Now my family has nothing to eat. Please get me justice.”

King Vikramaditya immediately ordered his spies to find the thief. Due to King Vikramaditya’s love for justice his spies were very efficient and soon they caught the thief. When the thief was brought to the court, he admitted that he had stolen the bull. But he also told that he committed this crime under compulsion. The thief said, “Maharaj, my mother is a widow and also very old. We had nothing to eat, so I had to steal under compulsion. My intention was not to harm anyone.”

Historical decision of the just king Vikramaditya

King Vikramaditya listened to the situation of both of them carefully and then took a decision. “In the first story of Singhasan Battisi” he sets an example with his unique justice. He gave the Brahmin a new bull and some grains in place of his bull, so that he could earn his livelihood again. Also, he gave an opportunity to the thief. He recruited him as a normal soldier in his army and said, “You stole, it was wrong. But if you work hard and honestly, then your life can improve. I give you this opportunity.”
