ईद आई थी। गांव के बच्चे नए कपड़े पहन रहे थे, खिलौने खरीदने की तैयारी में थे। लेकिन हामिद के पास पुराने, सिल-सिलाए कपड़े थे। जूते नहीं, ना कोई नया कुरता। फिर भी उसके चेहरे पर मुस्कान थी।
सुबह जब बच्चे ईदगाह की ओर निकले, हामिद भी उनके साथ हो लिया। रास्ते में सब बात कर रहे थे कि कौन सी मिठाई खाएंगे, कौन सा खिलौना लेंगे। पर हामिद बस चुपचाप चल रहा था।
जब सब बच्चे मेले में पहुँच कर मिठाइयाँ, झूले, खिलौने और तलवारें खरीद रहे थे, हामिद ने अपनी नन्ही सी मुट्ठी में बचाए तीन पैसे निकालकर कुछ अलग खरीदा – एक जोड़ी लोहे की चिमटे।
बच्चे उसका मज़ाक उड़ाने लगे – “तू मेले में आया और चिमटा खरीद लिया?”
लेकिन हामिद के दिल में एक अलग ही सोच थी।
जब वह घर लौटा और चिमटा आमीना को दिया, वह रो पड़ी।
“माँ, अब तुम्हें रोटियां सेंकते समय हाथ नहीं जलेंगे।”
उस नन्हे से बालक ने मेले की हर खुशी छोड़ दी थी… बस अपनी नानी की तकलीफ कम करने के लिए।

When he returned home and placed the tongs in her wrinkled hands, she wept — not out of sadness, but out of immense love.
