प्राचीन काल में असुरों का अत्याचार बहुत बढ़ गया था।
शुंभ और निशुंभ नामक दो असुरों ने देवताओं पर विजय प्राप्त कर ली थी और स्वर्गलोक पर अधिकार जमा लिया था।
देवता भयभीत होकर माँ पार्वती के पास पहुँचे और उन्हें अपनी व्यथा सुनाई।
माँ चण्डिका का प्राकट्य
देवताओं की प्रार्थना सुनकर माँ पार्वती ने अपने तेज से चण्डिका देवी का रूप धारण किया।
माँ चण्डिका ने शुंभ और निशुंभ के सेनापति चण्ड और मुण्ड का वध किया।
उनके वध के बाद माँ को चामुंडा कहा गया।
कालरात्रि रूप का अवतरण
लेकिन फिर प्रकट हुआ एक और भयंकर असुर – रक्तबीज।
रक्तबीज का वरदान था कि उसके शरीर से जब भी रक्त की एक बूँद धरती पर गिरेगी, वहाँ से उसके समान दूसरा असुर उत्पन्न हो जाएगा।
इससे देवता फिर भयभीत हो गए।
तब माँ दुर्गा ने अपना भयानक रूप धारण किया — वही रूप था माँ कालरात्रि का।
⚔️ माँ कालरात्रि का युद्ध
- उनका शरीर रात्रि के समान काला था।
- बाल बिखरे हुए थे।
- तीन आँखें, जिनसे अग्नि की ज्वालाएँ निकलती थीं।
- गले में विद्युत् जैसी माला थी।
- उनका वाहन था — गधा।
- हाथों में वज्र और खड्ग (तलवार)।
जब युद्ध प्रारंभ हुआ, माँ कालरात्रि ने अपना मुख विशाल किया और रक्तबीज का सारा रक्त उसी मुख में पी लिया।
इस प्रकार, रक्तबीज के शरीर से रक्त की कोई बूँद भूमि पर नहीं गिरी और उसका वध हो गया।
देवताओं ने “जय माँ कालरात्रि!” के नारे लगाए।
तभी से माँ को भय नाशिनी, अंधकार विनाशिनी और शत्रु संहारिणी कहा जाने लगा।

माँ कालरात्रि की रक्तबीज वध कथा (विस्तार से)
जब माँ दुर्गा का रूप-रंग गहरे अंधकार जैसा हुआ, जब उनके बाल बिखरे, जब उनकी तीन आँखों से अग्नि की लपटें निकलने लगीं — उसी क्षण जन्म हुआ माँ कालरात्रि का।
यह वह समय था जब सृष्टि में रक्तबीज नामक राक्षस का आतंक चरम पर था।
रक्तबीज का वरदान
रक्तबीज को भगवान ब्रह्मा से यह वरदान प्राप्त था कि –
“उसके शरीर से जब भी रक्त की एक बूँद भूमि पर गिरेगी, वहाँ उसी के समान एक और रक्तबीज उत्पन्न हो जाएगा।”
यह वरदान उसे लगभग अमर बना चुका था।
देवताओं ने उसके विरुद्ध कई बार युद्ध किया, लेकिन हर बार उसके शरीर से गिरे रक्त से हजारों रक्तबीज पैदा हो जाते।
जल्द ही सारा आकाश और धरती रक्तबीजों से भर गया।
देवताओं ने भयभीत होकर माँ दुर्गा से प्रार्थना की –
“हे मातेश्वरी, अब केवल आप ही हमें इस विनाशकारी दैत्य से मुक्ति दे सकती हैं।”
माँ कालरात्रि का प्रकट होना
माँ दुर्गा ने कहा –
“अब मैं अपने भयानकतम स्वरूप में प्रकट होऊँगी।”
अचानक आकाश में बिजली सी चमकी, पृथ्वी काँप उठी, और माँ के शरीर से कालरात्रि रूप निकला।
उनका रूप था –
- गहरा काला जैसे अनंत रात्रि,
- बाल बिखरे हुए,
- गले में विद्युत माला,
- हाथों में वज्र और तलवार,
- सवारी – एक गधा।
उनकी आँखों से निकलती अग्नि मानो सबका विनाश करने को तत्पर थी।
देवताओं ने उनके इस रूप को देखकर भय और भक्ति दोनों से काँप उठे।
भयंकर युद्ध
युद्ध प्रारंभ हुआ।
रक्तबीज ने अपने हजारों सेनापतियों के साथ आक्रमण किया।
जब माँ के अस्त्र-शस्त्रों से उसका रक्त गिरा, तो हर बूंद से एक नया रक्तबीज जन्म लेता।
क्षणभर में रणभूमि राक्षसों से भर गई।
माँ ने समझ लिया कि जब तक रक्तभूमि पर गिरेगा, युद्ध समाप्त नहीं होगा।
तब उन्होंने अपनी अद्भुत शक्ति का प्रयोग किया।
उन्होंने अपना मुख विशाल किया — इतना बड़ा कि पूरा आकाश उसमें समा जाए।
जब रक्तबीज पर वार किया गया, उसका रक्त गिरने से पहले ही माँ ने अपनी जिह्वा से उसे पी लिया।
हर बार जब उनका रक्त निकलता, माँ उसे पी जातीं।
इस प्रकार कोई नया रक्तबीज उत्पन्न नहीं हो सका।
अंततः माँ ने रक्तबीज का सिर काट दिया।
रक्तबीज वहीं समाप्त हो गया और देवताओं ने विजयगान किया —
“जय माँ कालरात्रि! जय भय नाशिनी!”
आकाश में पुष्पों की वर्षा होने लगी, ब्रह्मा, विष्णु और महेश ने माँ को प्रणाम किया।
