माँ दुर्गा का छठा स्वरूप माँ कात्यायनी कहलाता है। नवरात्रि के छठे दिन इनकी पूजा होती है। इन्हें महिषासुर मर्दिनी और विवाह की देवी भी कहा जाता है।
ऋषि कात्यायन की तपस्या
बहुत समय पहले एक महान तपस्वी ऋषि हुए – ऋषि कात्यायन। वे दुर्गा माता के प्रबल भक्त थे। उनका मन सदैव यही चाहता था कि माँ स्वयं उनके घर पुत्री रूप में जन्म लें। इसके लिए उन्होंने कठोर तपस्या की।
महिषासुर का आतंक
उसी समय दैत्यराज महिषासुर ने कठोर तप करके भगवान ब्रह्मा से वरदान पाया था कि उसकी मृत्यु केवल किसी स्त्री के हाथों ही हो सकती है।
इस वरदान के बल पर वह तीनों लोकों का स्वामी बन बैठा और देवताओं को स्वर्गलोक से बाहर निकाल दिया।
देवता भयभीत होकर त्रिदेव – ब्रह्मा, विष्णु और महेश के पास पहुँचे।
दिव्य शक्ति का प्राकट्य
देवताओं की प्रार्थना सुनकर त्रिदेव ने अपनी-अपनी दिव्य शक्तियाँ एकत्र कीं।
उन तीनों की सम्मिलित शक्तियों से एक अद्भुत तेजपुंज उत्पन्न हुआ।
इस तेजपुंज से एक दिव्य देवी प्रकट हुईं – जिनका रूप अनुपम और तेज अत्यधिक प्रखर था।
- उनके मुख से ब्रह्मा, विष्णु और महेश की संयुक्त आभा झलक रही थी।
- उनके हाथों में दिव्य अस्त्र-शस्त्र थे।
- उनका वाहन था – सिंह।
चूँकि वे ऋषि कात्यायन के घर पुत्री रूप में अवतरित हुई थीं, अतः वे कात्यायनी कहलाईं।
⚔️ महिषासुर वध
देवताओं ने उनसे विनती की कि वे महिषासुर का अंत करें।
माँ कात्यायनी ने अपनी सिंहवाहिनी पर सवार होकर महिषासुर से घोर युद्ध किया।
यह युद्ध कई दिनों तक चला।
अंततः माँ ने अपने त्रिशूल से महिषासुर का वध किया और देवताओं को पुनः स्वर्गलोक में स्थापित किया।
महत्व
माँ कात्यायनी की उत्पत्ति कथा से यह शिक्षा मिलती है कि जब अधर्म और अन्याय अपनी सीमा पार कर जाता है, तब शक्ति स्वयं अवतरित होकर धर्म की रक्षा करती है।

Origin Story of Maa Katyayani
Maa Katyayani is the sixth form of Goddess Durga, worshipped on the sixth day of Navratri. She is also called Mahishasuramardini and the Goddess of Marriage.
Sage Katyayan’s Penance
Long ago, there lived a great sage named Rishi Katyayan. He was a devout worshipper of Goddess Durga and wished that the goddess would one day be born as his daughter. For this, he performed severe penance.
The Terror of Mahishasura
At the same time, the demon king Mahishasura had performed intense austerities and received a boon from Lord Brahma that no man could kill him — only a woman could end his life.
With this boon, Mahishasura conquered the three worlds and drove the gods out of heaven. The gods, distressed and helpless, approached the holy trinity — Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva.
Manifestation of the Divine Power
Hearing their plea, the three supreme gods combined their divine energies.
From this collective energy emerged a dazzling goddess, radiating immense brilliance and power.
