बीरबल की खिचड़ी (Hindi Story – Birbal Ki Khichdi)
एक बार की बात है, सर्दियों का मौसम था और हवा बहुत तेज़ और ठंडी चल रही थी। सम्राट अकबर अपने दरबारियों के साथ बगीचे में बैठे थे। उन्होंने पूछा,
“कोई व्यक्ति क्या इतनी ठंड में सारी रात बिना आग या गर्म कपड़ों के पानी में खड़ा रह सकता है?”
दरबारियों ने कहा, “नहीं जहाँपनाह, यह असंभव है!”
लेकिन बीरबल ने कहा, “जहाँपनाह, अगर इच्छा हो तो इंसान कुछ भी कर सकता है।”
अकबर ने कहा, “अगर तुम मुझे कोई ऐसा व्यक्ति ढूंढ दो जो यह कर सके, तो मैं उसे इनाम दूँगा।”
गरीब आदमी की हिम्मत
बीरबल एक गरीब आदमी को लेकर आए और उससे पूछा कि क्या वह इनाम के बदले ठंडी रात नदी में खड़ा रह सकता है। गरीब आदमी को उम्मीद जगी और उसने चुनौती स्वीकार की।
रात भर वह आदमी जमती हुई नदी में खड़ा रहा, बिना आग या गर्म कपड़ों के। अगली सुबह जब वह ज़िंदा बाहर आया, सब हैरान थे। लेकिन बादशाह ने इनाम देने से इनकार कर दिया।
उन्होंने कहा, “तुमने कहा था कि तुम्हारे सामने कोई आग नहीं थी, लेकिन तुम्हारी नजरें दूर महल की जलती मशालों पर थीं। वही गर्मी तुम्हें मिली होगी।”
बीरबल की खिचड़ी
बीरबल चुप रहे। अगली सुबह वे दरबार नहीं आए। कई दिन बीते, लेकिन बीरबल नहीं आए। बादशाह ने एक सिपाही को भेजा।
सिपाही ने देखा – बीरबल एक पेड़ की टहनी पर बर्तन लटकाकर नीचे आग जला रहे थे और खिचड़ी पकाने की कोशिश कर रहे थे।
सिपाही बोला, “यह कैसे पक सकती है? आग नीचे और बर्तन ऊपर!”
बीरबल बोले, “अगर आदमी दूर जल रही मशाल से गर्मी पा सकता है, तो मेरी खिचड़ी भी दूर से पक सकती है!”
बात अकबर तक पहुँची, और उन्हें अपनी गलती का एहसास हुआ।
राजा का पश्चाताप
अकबर ने बीरबल को दरबार बुलाया और कहा,
“बीरबल, तुमने मुझे बहुत सुंदर तरीके से सिखाया कि न्याय क्या होता है।”
उस गरीब आदमी को सम्मान के साथ बुलाया गया और उचित इनाम दिया गया।
नैतिक शिक्षा (Moral of the Story in Hindi)
- न्याय में सच्चाई को समझना ज़रूरी है, न कि बहानों में उलझना।
- बुद्धिमानी से सच को साबित करना भी एक कला है।

Birbal’s Khichdi (English Story)
One winter day, Emperor Akbar was sitting in his garden with his courtiers. The wind was freezing. Akbar asked,
“Can anyone stand in a river all night in such cold without fire or warm clothes?”
Most courtiers said, “Impossible, Your Majesty!”
But Birbal replied, “With strong willpower, anything is possible.”
Akbar challenged, “If you find such a man, I’ll reward him.”
A Poor Man’s Determination
Birbal brought a poor man and asked if he could stand in the freezing river for a reward. The man, desperate for help, agreed.
All night, he stood in the icy river with nothing to keep him warm. In the morning, he emerged shivering but alive. Everyone was amazed.
But Akbar said, “You didn’t pass the test. You were looking at the palace torches. That warmth kept you alive.”
The poor man was heartbroken.
Birbal’s Way of Justice
Birbal said nothing. He stopped coming to court.
Days passed.
A soldier was sent to check on Birbal. He found him trying to cook khichdi by hanging a pot high on a tree branch while the fire was far below.
The soldier laughed, “That khichdi will never cook!”
Birbal replied, “Why not? If torchlight from a distance can warm a man, this fire can surely cook my khichdi from far away!”
The message reached Akbar.
Akbar’s Realization
Akbar realized his mistake. He called Birbal and said,
“You’ve shown me the meaning of true justice.”
The poor man was called back and rewarded generously.
