कालिया नाग का आतंक
गोकुल की पवित्र यमुना नदी कभी सबके लिए जीवनदायिनी थी।
लेकिन समय के साथ उस नदी में एक भयंकर कालिया नामक विषैला नाग आकर बस गया।
उसके विष से यमुना का जल काला पड़ गया, मछलियाँ मरने लगीं, गायें और पक्षी भी उस जल के पास जाते ही प्राण त्याग देते थे।
गोकुलवासी भयभीत थे।
न तो कोई नदी में स्नान कर पाता, न ही जल पीने का साहस करता।
कृष्ण का संकल्प
एक दिन कान्हा अपने सखा ग्वालबालों के साथ खेलते-खेलते यमुना किनारे पहुँचे।
बालकों ने देखा कि नदी का जल विषाक्त है।
तभी कान्हा ने ठान लिया –
“अब इस कालिया नाग का अंत करना ही होगा। गोकुलवासियों को भयमुक्त करना मेरा कर्तव्य है।”
यमुना में प्रवेश
कृष्ण खेलते-खेलते झटपट यमुना में कूद पड़े।
ग्वालबाल डरकर चिल्लाने लगे –
“अरे! कान्हा को बचाओ! वहाँ कालिया नाग है!”
पूरा गोकुल नदी तट पर दौड़ आया।
माँ यशोदा, नंद बाबा और गोपियाँ विलाप करने लगीं।
कालिया नाग का प्रकट होना
जल के भीतर विशाल कालिया नाग प्रकट हुआ।
उसके फन पर से विष की ज्वालाएँ निकल रही थीं।
उसने कृष्ण को अपने भयंकर फनों से जकड़ लिया।
गोकुलवासी तट पर खड़े रोने लगे।
सभी को लगा कि अब कान्हा का अंत हो जाएगा।
कान्हा का दिव्य खेल
लेकिन कृष्ण तो स्वयं योगेश्वर थे।
उन्होंने अचानक नाग के फनों से खुद को छुड़ाया और उसके फनों पर चढ़कर नृत्य करने लगे।
वे इतनी मधुरता और शक्ति से नृत्य कर रहे थे कि कालिया नाग धीरे-धीरे थककर गिरने लगा।
हर बार जब कान्हा किसी फन पर पाँव रखते, वह दबकर शक्तिहीन हो जाता।
गोकुलवासी “जय कन्हैया लाल की!” का नारा लगाकर झूम उठे।
नागपत्नी की प्रार्थना
आखिरकार कालिया नाग कमजोर होकर हार मान गया।
उसकी पत्नियाँ (नागिनियाँ) हाथ जोड़कर बोलीं –
“हे देव! हमारे स्वामी को क्षमा कीजिए।
यह अहंकारी हो गया था। कृपा कर इसे प्राणदान दें।”
कृष्ण की कृपा
कृष्ण मुस्कुराए और बोले –
“ठीक है, मैं इसे जीवनदान देता हूँ।
परंतु अब यह यमुना को विषाक्त नहीं करेगा।
कालिया! तुम तुरंत यहाँ से निकलकर समुद्र में जाओ और दोबारा गोकुलवासियों को कष्ट मत देना।”
कालिया नाग folded hands में प्रणाम करके अपनी पत्नियों सहित यमुना से चला गया।
गोकुलवासियों का आनंद
गोकुल में उल्लास छा गया।
ग्वालबाल और ग्रामीण खुशी से नाच उठे।
माँ यशोदा ने कान्हा को गले से लगा लिया और बोलीं –
“लला! तू ही तो हमारा पालनहार है।”
आध्यात्मिक महत्व
- यह कथा बताती है कि असुर और विषैले स्वभाव पर विजय केवल ईश्वर की कृपा और साहस से ही संभव है।
- यह लीला सिखाती है कि ईश्वर अपने भक्तों को भयमुक्त करते हैं।

Krishna’s Kaliya Naag Leela – When Little Kanha Subdued the Venomous Serpent
The Terror of Kaliya Naag
The sacred Yamuna river once gave life to the people of Gokul.
But a venomous serpent named Kaliya Naag had made it his home.
His poison turned the waters black, fish died, birds fell unconscious, and even cows perished if they drank from it.
The villagers lived in constant fear.
Krishna’s Resolve
One day, Krishna was playing near the Yamuna with his cowherd friends.
Seeing the poisoned water, Krishna decided:
“This serpent must be defeated. I shall free Yamuna and protect my people.”
The Mighty Serpent Appears
Krishna jumped into the waters.
His friends screamed for help, and soon the whole village gathered at the riverbank, crying in fear.
From the depths emerged the gigantic Kaliya Naag, spewing venom, wrapping Krishna tightly in his coils.
The villagers wept, thinking Krishna would not survive.
Krishna’s Divine Dance
But Krishna, the Lord of the universe, was only playing His divine game.
He freed Himself and leapt upon Kaliya’s hoods.
Then, balancing gracefully, He began to dance upon the serpent’s heads.
With each step, Krishna pressed down the pride and poison of Kaliya.
The serpent grew weaker and weaker, until he finally collapsed.
The villagers shouted in joy:
“Victory to Krishna! Victory to our Kanha!”
The Plea of the Serpent’s Wives
At last, the wives of Kaliya bowed before Krishna and prayed:
“O Lord! Forgive our husband. He was arrogant but now realizes Your power. Please spare his life.”
Krishna’s Mercy
Krishna smiled and said:
“I grant Kaliya his life.
But he must leave Yamuna forever and never trouble the people again.”
Humbled and repentant, Kaliya left the river with his wives, never to return.
Joy in Gokul
The people of Gokul rejoiced with relief and devotion.
Mother Yashoda embraced Krishna tightly, realizing yet again that her little boy was none other than the protector of the world.
