प्रतियोगिता प्रारंभ हुई। गरुड़ अपनी पूरी ताकत और गति से उड़ चले। वे सोच रहे थे कि विजेता तो मैं ही बनूंगा। लेकिन हनुमान जी ने भगवान राम का स्मरण किया और बिना किसी अहंकार के शांतिपूर्वक उड़ चले।

गरुड़ जी का अहंकार चूर-चूर हो गया। उन्होंने हनुमान जी के चरणों में नमन किया और कहा,

Long ago, Hanuman and Garuda were both the favourite devotees of Lord Vishnu. Both were considered to be extremely powerful and fast flyers. But one day, a feeling of arrogance arose between the two regarding power and speed.

Garuda’s Arrogance

Garuda was very proud of his speed and strength. He thought that no one in the entire universe could fly faster than him. In his arrogance, he declared that,

“No one can fly faster than me. My speed is the best!”

Hearing this, the gods got worried. They knew that Hanuman ji had more strength and devotion than Garuda, but he was not arrogant.
