राजा अर्जुनदेव ने जब इन सभी गतिविधियों को देखा, तो उन्होंने निर्णय लिया कि उत्तराधिकारी तय करने के लिए एक गुप्त परीक्षा होगी — ऐसी परीक्षा जो किसी की चालाकी, नाम, या प्रभाव से नहीं, बल्कि चरित्र से पार होगी।
तीनों राजकुमारों को अलग-अलग कार्य दिए गए:
- गरीबों की सेवा
- न्याय का निर्णय देना
- सच्चाई के कठिन सवालों का सामना
रानी सूर्या का पुत्र सेवा के समय केवल दिखावा करता रहा। गरीबों को कपड़े बाँटे लेकिन उनकी समस्याएँ सुनी तक नहीं।
