बहुत समय पहले, जब भारत छोटे-छोटे राज्यों में बँटा हुआ था, हिमालय की तराई में एक विशाल साम्राज्य फैला हुआ था। उस साम्राज्य का राजा “विक्रमादित्य” कहलाता था। वह केवल बलशाली योद्धा ही नहीं था, बल्कि गहरी बुद्धि और न्यायप्रियता के लिए भी प्रसिद्ध था।
राजा का जीवन अद्भुत था। सुबह सूर्योदय से पहले वह स्नान कर पूजा करता, फिर जनता की समस्याएँ सुनता। दोपहर में वह सैनिकों और मंत्रियों के साथ बैठकर राज्य की नीतियाँ तय करता। शाम होते ही वह महल के उद्यान में जाता जहाँ तरह-तरह के पशु-पक्षी रहते।
इन्हीं पशुओं में सबसे अद्भुत थे दो शेर – जिनकी कहानी आज भी लोगों की ज़ुबान पर है।
अध्याय 1 – दो शेरों की अद्भुत एंट्री
एक दिन राज्य के सीमावर्ती जंगल में शिकारियों ने दो छोटे शेर पकड़ लिए। वे घायल और डरे हुए थे। सैनिकों ने जब यह समाचार राजा को दिया, तो राजा ने तुरंत कहा:
“उन्हें मारना मत, महल लाओ। उनका इलाज होगा।”

वज्र सीधे हाथी पर टूट पड़ा। बिना सोचे-समझे लड़ाई शुरू कर दी। नतीजा – वह गंभीर रूप से घायल हो गया।
धैर्य ने पहले हाथी को गौर से देखा। उसने उसकी आँखों में दुख महसूस किया। धीरे-धीरे पास जाकर रास्ता घेरा और उसे जंगल की ओर मोड़ दिया।
गाँववाले खुशी से चिल्लाए – “जय हो शांत शेर की! इसने हमारी जान बचाई।”
राजा ने गहरी साँस ली और सोचा –
“शक्ति आवश्यक है, पर बुद्धि के बिना वह विनाश लाती है।”
अध्याय 4 – दरबार में चर्चा
अगले दिन दरबार में मंत्रियों ने राजा से कहा –
“महाराज, वज्र तो खतरनाक है। उसे महल से बाहर निकाल देना चाहिए।”
राजा बोले – “नहीं, हर प्राणी में अच्छाई और बुराई दोनों छिपी हैं। हमें केवल यह देखना है कि किसे पोषित करना है।”
यह वाक्य राजा ने पूरे राज्य को सुनाने के लिए शिलालेख पर खुदवा दिया।
अध्याय 5 – दूसरी परीक्षा (ईमानदारी और लालच)

“अगर मेरे राज्य पर संकट आए, तो क्या करोगे?”
वज्र बोला – “मैं सबको डरा दूँगा। विरोधियों को चीर-फाड़ दूँगा।”
धैर्य ने शांत स्वर में कहा – “मैं जनता को साथ लेकर राज्य की रक्षा करूँगा। क्योंकि असली ताकत जनता का विश्वास है।”

“बल क्षणिक है, पर विश्वास शाश्वत।”
अध्याय 7 – चौथी परीक्षा (द्रोही मंत्री का षड्यंत्र)
राजसभा में एक मंत्री था, जो राजा से जलता था। उसने वज्र को भड़काया –
“तुम सबसे शक्तिशाली हो। राजा क्यों शासन करे? तुम क्यों नहीं?”
वज्र का गुस्सा बढ़ गया। उसने महल के पहरेदारों पर हमला कर दिया।
धैर्य बीच में आया और उसे रोका। उसने कहा –
“भाई, शक्ति का प्रयोग राज्य की रक्षा के लिए करो, न कि उसके विनाश के लिए।”

“हर इंसान के भीतर दो शेर रहते हैं। एक क्रोध और लालच का, दूसरा दया और बुद्धि का। जिस शेर को हम खिलाते हैं, वही हमारे जीवन का भविष्य तय करता है।”
जनता ने तालियाँ बजाईं। यह शिक्षा पूरे साम्राज्य में फैल गई।

Raja Aur Do Sher Ki Kahani (English)
Long ago, when India was divided into small states, a huge empire was spread in the foothills of the Himalayas. The king of that empire was called “Vikramaditya”. He was not only a powerful warrior, but was also famous for his deep wisdom and sense of justice.
The king’s life was wonderful. In the morning before sunrise, he would bathe and worship, then listen to the problems of the people. In the afternoon, he would sit with the soldiers and ministers and decide the policies of the state. In the evening, he would go to the palace garden where various kinds of animals and birds lived.
Among these animals, the most amazing were two lions – whose story is still on people’s tongues.
Chapter 1 – Amazing entry of two lions
One day, hunters caught two small lions in the forest bordering the kingdom. They were injured and scared. When the soldiers gave this news to the king, the king immediately said:
“Don’t kill them, bring them to the palace. They will be treated.”
The courtiers were surprised – “Maharaj, lions are dangerous, keeping them is not without danger.”
The king smiled – “If we humans can get our wounds treated, then why can’t animals?”
The king made a special place for both the lions in the palace. The doctor and servants started serving them day and night. Within a few months they became healthy and strong.
Chapter 2 – Difference in Temperament
Both the lions looked similar – golden manes, glowing eyes, and roars that shook the entire jungle. But the king soon realized that they had different natures.
The first lion (called “Vajra”) was short-tempered, greedy and impatient.
The second lion (named “Patience”) was calm, kind and thoughtful.
When food was offered, Vajra would roar in anger and grab more. While Dhairya would quietly eat his share and share the leftovers with the smaller animals.
The king would often think looking at them –
“These two lions are like the two powers of my kingdom – one of destruction, the other of construction.”
Chapter 3 – The First Test (Elephant Attacks the Village)
One day a wild elephant entered a village near the kingdom. He was trampling the crops and attacking people. The villagers rushed to the palace in panic.
The king immediately sent the two lions.
Vajra fell straight on the elephant. He started fighting without thinking. Result – he was seriously injured.
Dhairya first looked at the elephant carefully. He felt sadness in his eyes. Slowly they came closer and blocked the way and turned it towards the forest.
The villagers shouted in joy – “Hail the calm lion! He saved our lives.”
The king took a deep breath and thought –
“Power is necessary, but without wisdom it brings destruction.”
Chapter 4 – Discussion in the court
The next day in the court the ministers said to the king –
“Maharaj, Vajra is dangerous. He should be thrown out of the palace.”
The king said – “No, good and evil are hidden in every creature. We just have to see which one to nurture.”
The king got this sentence engraved on a stone inscription so that the whole kingdom can hear it.
Chapter 5 – Second Test (Honesty and Greed)
The king gave food to both the lions to test them.
Vajra tried to eat more than his share at once and pounced on Dhairya.
Dhairya, without fighting, distributed his share of food among the small animals.
The king, seeing this scene, said to the people –
“This is the difference – greed brings war, and kindness brings peace.”
Chapter 6 – The Third Test (The King’s Dream)
One night the king had a strange dream. He saw that his throne was in danger.
After waking up in the morning, he called both the lions and asked –
“If my kingdom faces a crisis, what will you do?”
Vajra said – “I will scare everyone. I will tear apart my opponents.”
Dhairya said in a calm voice – “I will protect the kingdom by taking the public along with me. Because the real power is the trust of the public.”
The king thought deeply –
“Power is momentary, but trust is eternal.”
Chapter 7 – Fourth Test (Conspiracy of the Rebel Minister)
There was a minister in the royal court who was jealous of the king. He provoked Vajra –
“You are the most powerful. Why should the king rule? Why not you?”
Vajra’s anger increased. He attacked the palace guards.
Dhairya came in between and stopped him. He said –
“Brother, use power to protect the kingdom, not to destroy it.”
Vajra had tears in his eyes. For the first time he realized that his anger was blinding him.
The king hugged both of them and said –
“This is life – there are two lions inside. One of greed, the other of patience. The one whom we feed, he will be powerful.”
Chapter 8 – Lessons of the people
That day the king called a meeting in the entire kingdom. He said –
“There are two lions inside every human being. One of anger and greed, the other of compassion and wisdom. The lion we feed decides the future of our life.”
The public applauded. This teaching spread throughout the empire.
