एक दिन राजा शिकार पर गया और रानी अकेली रह गई।
उसी समय बृहस्पतिदेव साधु के रूप में उसके महल पहुंचे।
रानी का अहंकार और बृहस्पतिदेव का शाप
जब साधु ने भिक्षा मांगी तो रानी बोली—
“मैं दान-पुण्य से तंग आ चुकी हूँ। काश हमारा सारा धन नष्ट हो जाए।”
साधु ने कहा—
“धन कभी व्यर्थ नहीं जाता। भूखों को भोजन, प्यासों को पानी, कन्याओं के विवाह—ऐसे कार्य तुम्हारे पुण्य को बढ़ाते हैं।”
लेकिन रानी न मानी।
तब साधु बोले—
“यदि तुम्हारी यही इच्छा है, तो तथास्तु!
गुरुवार को घर लीपना, पीली मिट्टी से सिर धोना और कपड़े भट्ठी में चढ़ाना।
तुम्हारा धन स्वयं नष्ट हो जाएगा।”
साधु अदृश्य हो गए।
तीन गुरुवार और रानी का जीवन बदल गया
रानी ने वैसा ही किया।
सिर्फ तीन गुरुवार में ही राजमहल निर्धन हो गया।
भोजन तक के लाले पड़ने लगे।
राजा ने रानी से कहा—
“मैं परदेश जाकर श्रम करके कमाऊँगा। तुम यहाँ रहो।”
राजा जंगल से लकड़ी काटकर बेचने लगा।
इधर रानी और दासी कई दिनों से भूखे रहे।
रानी की बहन गुरुवार का व्रत कर रही थी, इसलिए उसने दासी से बात नहीं की।
रानी को यह संसार का सबसे बड़ा अपमान लगा।
बृहस्पतिदेव की कृपा का पहला संकेत
रानी की बहन पूजा के बाद उसके घर आई और बोली—
“तुम्हारे घर में अनाज अवश्य मिलेगा।”
दासी ने खोजा और सचमुच अनाज से भरा घड़ा मिला।

“गुरुवार व्रत करो, भगवान तुम्हारी विपत्ति हटाएँगे।”
रानी व दासी ने पहला व्रत रखा।

लेकिन एक गुरुवार व्रत भूल जाने से वह फिर बंध गया—इस बार नगर के राजा ने उसे चोरी के झूठे आरोप में कैद कर लिया।

रानी ने राजा का स्वागत किया और कथा सुनाई।
