हाथी और चूहे – पंचतंत्र की कहानी (हिंदी में)
बहुत समय पहले, एक हरे-भरे जंगल में हाथियों का झुंड रहता था। पास में एक पुराना, वीरान गाँव था जहाँ कई चूहे अपना घर बनाए हुए थे।
गर्मी का मौसम आने पर जंगल का तालाब सूख गया। पानी की तलाश में हाथी हर रोज़ उसी वीरान गाँव से होकर पास की नदी तक जाते थे। लेकिन हाथियों के बड़े-बड़े पाँव से रास्ते में कई चूहे कुचलकर मर जाते थे।
चूहों के राजा ने अपने साथियों से कहा,
“अगर ऐसा ही चलता रहा तो हमारा पूरा वंश नष्ट हो जाएगा। हमें हाथियों से बात करनी होगी।”
🤝 मित्रता का प्रस्ताव
चूहे राजा, अपने साथ कुछ चूहों को लेकर हाथियों के राजा के पास गया और विनम्रता से बोला,
“महाराज, हम छोटे और कमजोर हैं, लेकिन हमारी भी ज़िंदगी उतनी ही मूल्यवान है जितनी आपकी। कृपया हमारे घरों के ऊपर से न गुज़रा करें, नहीं तो हमारे लिए जीना मुश्किल हो जाएगा।”
हाथियों के राजा ने दया दिखाते हुए कहा,
“तुमने सही कहा। हम अब तुम्हारे घरों से होकर नहीं गुजरेंगे।”
दोनों में मित्रता हो गई।

कुछ महीनों बाद, गाँव के पास शिकारियों ने हाथियों को पकड़ने के लिए गहरे गड्ढे खोदकर जाल बिछा दिया। कई हाथी उसमें फँस गए और निकल नहीं पा रहे थे।
हाथियों के राजा को चूहे मित्र याद आए। उसने तुरंत संदेश भेजा।
चूहों का झुंड वहाँ पहुँचा और अपने तेज़ दाँतों से रस्सियाँ काट दीं।
जल्द ही सारे हाथी आज़ाद हो गए।

The Elephants and the Mice – Panchatantra Story (English)
Once upon a time, in a lush green forest, lived a herd of elephants. Nearby, in an abandoned village, many mice had made their homes.
During summer, the pond in the forest dried up. The elephants began walking through the abandoned village daily to reach the river for water. Unfortunately, many mice were crushed under the elephants’ heavy feet.
The king of the mice called a meeting and said,
“If this continues, our entire community will be destroyed. We must talk to the elephants.”
🤝 A Proposal of Friendship
The mouse king, along with some mice, approached the king of the elephants and humbly said,
“Your Majesty, we are small and weak, but our lives are just as precious as yours. Please avoid passing through our homes, or it will be impossible for us to survive.”
The elephant king agreed with kindness,
“You are right. We will no longer pass through your settlement.”
From that day, a bond of friendship was formed.
🐘 Returning the Favour
Months later, hunters set deep pits and traps near the village to catch elephants. Many elephants got trapped and could not escape.
The elephant king remembered his mouse friends and sent for help. The mice arrived quickly and, with their sharp teeth, gnawed through the ropes. Soon, all the elephants were free again.

- Everyone matters, whether big or small.
- Friendship requires equality and respect.
- A good deed should always be repaid.
