बहुत समय पहले की बात है, एक गाँव में एक गरीब ब्राह्मण रहता था। वह मंदिर में पूजा-पाठ करके अपनी जीविका चलाता था। उसकी कमाई बहुत कम थी, लेकिन उसका मन हमेशा कल्पनाओं और सपनों में खोया रहता था।
एक दिन उसे किसी ने धान का एक मटका दान में दिया। उसने मटके को घर के कोने में टांग दिया ताकि चूहे या जानवर इसे खराब न करें।
ब्राह्मण उस मटके को देख-देखकर सपने बुनने लगा,
“जब ये धान बिकेगा, तो मुझे खूब पैसे मिलेंगे। फिर मैं उन पैसों से एक बकरी खरीदूँगा। बकरी के बच्चे होंगे, उन्हें बेचकर मैं एक गाय खरीदूँगा। फिर गाय से दूध मिलेगा, दही-बटर बेचूँगा और खूब अमीर हो जाऊँगा।”

वह अपनी कल्पनाओं में और आगे बढ़ने लगा,
“जब मैं अमीर बन जाऊँगा, तो एक सुंदर पत्नी से विवाह करूँगा। हमारे बच्चे होंगे। अगर बच्चा शरारत करेगा, तो मैं उसे डंडे से मारूँगा… ऐसे!”
इतना कहते-कहते ब्राह्मण ने अपने पास रखे डंडे को हवा में घुमाया। लेकिन डंडा सीधे धान के मटके पर जा लगा। मटका टूटा, सारा धान बिखर गया और ब्राह्मण का सपना भी चूर-चूर हो गया।

The Brahmin’s Dream – A Panchatantra Story
Long ago, in a small village, there lived a poor Brahmin. He earned his living by performing rituals in temples. His income was meager, but his mind was always full of dreams and fantasies.
One day, someone gave him a pot full of rice grains as alms. The Brahmin hung the pot in a corner of his hut to keep it safe from rats and animals.
Looking at the pot, the Brahmin began to dream:
