“मैंने उन्हें सुरक्षित तालाब में छोड़ दिया।”

कुछ दिनों बाद, एक बुद्धिमान केकड़ा बोला,
“अब मेरी बारी है। मुझे भी वहाँ ले चलो।”

सारस ने सोचा, “केकड़ा नई चीज़ है, स्वादिष्ट होगा।” और खुशी से उसे भी ले गया। लेकिन केकड़ा बहुत चतुर था। उसने रास्ते में चारों ओर देखा और मछलियों की हड्डियों का ढेर देखा।

अब उसे सारा सच समझ में आ गया। उसने तुरंत अपने पंजों से सारस की गरदन पकड़ ली और कसकर दबा दिया। सारस छटपटाया, लेकिन बूढ़ा होने के कारण वह खुद को छुड़ा न सका। अंततः केकड़े ने उसे वहीं मार डाला।
