राजा दशरथ एक महान योद्धा और पराक्रमी शासक थे। किंतु उनके जीवन की सबसे बड़ी भूल थी – श्रवण कुमार की हत्या।
कहते हैं कि एक बार वे शिकार पर गए और आवाज़ सुनकर समझ बैठे कि वह कोई पशु है। उन्होंने तीर चला दिया, परंतु वह श्रवण कुमार निकले।
जब दशरथ उनकी वृद्ध आँखों के माता-पिता के पास पहुँचे, तो वे विलाप करने लगे और श्राप दिया –
“जिस प्रकार हमने अपने बेटे की वियोग-पीड़ा झेली है, उसी प्रकार तुम भी पुत्र-वियोग से प्राण त्यागोगे।”
यह घटना बताती है कि राजा दशरथ भी कर्मफल से मुक्त नहीं हो सके।

2. रथ पर विजय प्राप्त राजा

दशरथ का नाम ही उनके पराक्रम से जुड़ा है – “दश” + “रथ”, अर्थात् दस रथों को एक साथ नियंत्रित करने वाला वीर।
युद्धभूमि में उनकी रणनीति और पराक्रम अतुलनीय थे। कहा जाता है कि उन्होंने अकेले ही शत्रुओं की विशाल सेनाओं को परास्त किया।
यही कारण था कि वे अयोध्या के सर्वप्रिय और आदरणीय राजा बने।

3. तीन रानियाँ और अपूर्ण संतानों की पीड़ा

दशरथ की तीन रानियाँ – कौशल्या, सुमित्रा और कैकेयी थीं। लंबे समय तक उन्हें संतान नहीं हुई।
राज्य की चिंता और वंश परंपरा की रक्षा के लिए दशरथ ने पुत्रकामेष्टि यज्ञ करवाया। इसी यज्ञ के फलस्वरूप भगवान श्रीराम, भरत, लक्ष्मण और शत्रुघ्न का जन्म हुआ।
यह घटना बताती है कि दशरथ केवल एक राजा नहीं, बल्कि वंश और धर्म की रक्षा के लिए कर्तव्यनिष्ठ पिता भी थे।

4. कैकेयी को दिए गए वरदान

कैकेयी ने एक बार युद्ध में दशरथ की रक्षा की थी। प्रसन्न होकर दशरथ ने उसे दो वरदान देने का वचन दिया।
बाद में जब मंथरा ने कैकेयी को उकसाया, तो उसने उन्हीं वरदानों का प्रयोग किया – राम के वनवास और भरत के राज्याभिषेक के लिए।
दशरथ उस समय असहाय हो गए। लेकिन उन्होंने अपना वचन निभाया, क्योंकि वे सत्य और प्रतिज्ञा के पालन में अडिग थे।

5. राम-वियोग और दशरथ की मृत्यु

राम के वनवास पर जाने का आदेश सुनाते समय दशरथ का हृदय टूट गया। वे जानते थे कि यह सब उनके अतीत के श्राप का परिणाम है।
राम के वियोग में वे इतने दुखी हुए कि अंततः उन्होंने प्राण त्याग दिए।
उनकी मृत्यु केवल शारीरिक नहीं, बल्कि पुत्र-प्रेम और प्रतिज्ञा की टकराहट का परिणाम थी।

When Dasharatha met the grieving parents, they cursed him:

The very name Dasharatha means “one who can control ten chariots at once.”

Though he had three queens – Kaushalya, Sumitra, and Kaikeyi – Dasharatha remained childless for many years.
Worried about his lineage, he performed the Putrakameshti Yajna. From this sacred ritual, he was blessed with four sons – Rama, Bharata, Lakshmana, and Shatrughna.

In a past battle, Kaikeyi once saved Dasharatha’s life. Grateful, Dasharatha promised her two boons.
Later, under the influence of her maid Manthara, Kaikeyi demanded those boons – Rama’s exile and Bharata’s coronation.
Though heartbroken, Dasharatha kept his promise, showing his unyielding commitment to truth and duty.

5. Death in Rama’s Separation

When Rama left for exile, Dasharatha’s heart broke. He realized this was the fulfillment of the curse from Shravan Kumar’s parents.
