बहुत समय पहले की बात है, एक घने जंगल में एक क्रूर और शक्तिशाली शेर (सिंह) रहता था। वह रोज जंगल के जानवरों को मारकर खा जाता था। इससे पूरा जंगल डर और आतंक में जीने लगा।
जंगल के सभी जानवर एक दिन एकत्र हुए और शेर से प्रार्थना की,
“हे जंगल के राजा, यदि आप हर दिन सिर्फ एक जानवर को खाने की अनुमति दें, तो हम हर दिन खुद बारी-बारी से आपके पास आएंगे। इससे जंगल में शांति बनी रहेगी।”
शेर ने सोचा, “बिना मेहनत के खाना मिलेगा? यह तो अच्छा सौदा है।”
वह मान गया।
अब हर दिन एक जानवर शेर के पास जाता और शेर उसे खा लेता। एक दिन बारी आई एक छोटे से चालाक खरगोश की। उसने सोचा,

खरगोश जान-बूझकर बहुत देर से शेर के पास पहुँचा। शेर गुस्से में दहाड़ा,
“इतनी देर क्यों हुई? मैं भूखा हूँ!”
खरगोश ने विनम्रता से कहा,
“महाराज, मैं समय पर आ रहा था। लेकिन रास्ते में एक और शेर ने मुझे रोक लिया। उसने कहा कि वही जंगल का असली राजा है। बहुत मुश्किल से मैं बचकर आपके पास आया हूँ।”
यह सुनते ही शेर का अहंकार आहत हुआ। उसने कहा,
“मुझे उस नकली शेर का पता बताओ! मैं अभी उसे मार कर दिखा दूंगा कि असली राजा कौन है।”
खरगोश शेर को पास के कुएं के पास ले गया और कहा,
“महाराज, वह शेर इसी कुएं में रहता है।”
शेर ने कुएं में झाँका और अपने ही प्रतिबिंब को देखा। उसने सोचा, “यही है वह दुस्साहसी शेर!” और गुस्से में कुएं में कूद पड़ा।
इस तरह, वह अपने ही घमंड और मूर्खता के कारण मर गया।

The Lion and the Clever Rabbit – A Panchatantra Story (English)
Once upon a time in a dense forest, there lived a cruel and powerful lion. Every day, he would kill many animals for food. The entire forest was in fear and chaos.
One day, the animals gathered and made a proposal to the lion,
“O King of the jungle, if you agree to eat just one animal daily, we will come to you in turn. That way, no one else will be harmed and peace will prevail.”
The lion agreed happily, thinking,
“Why hunt when food will come to me?”
From that day onward, animals started coming to him one by one. One day, it was the turn of a small but clever rabbit.
The rabbit thought,
“If I go like the others, I’ll be killed. I need a plan.”

In his blind rage, the lion jumped into the well to attack his rival—and drowned.
